Meet the Winemakers
The Buxton Ridge vineyard was established at the foothills of the beautiful Cathedral Ranges in 1996 with a philosophy of producing the best possible wines: to be the best we can be in every facet of the process, from the vineyard to your glass.
Buxton Ridge is family owned, commenced originally by the late Wolf Rüdiger Gelbert and his wife Lorna. After Wolf's death in 1998, their son Michael wanted to continue with the venture with Lorna so took on the management of the vineyard and, later, the role of winemaker.
In the vineyard, we don't irrigate, we don't fertilize and we minimise the use of chemicals in order to keep our footprint as low as possible. Our cropping levels are low which we believe to be the best practice in order to achieve the highest quality fruit. We grow four varietals, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Shiraz from which we make six wines, all of which are named after family members.
With just under 7 acres under vines Buxton Ridge is very small. The first vintage was in 2001 producing a Pinot Noir and Shiraz both with distinctive character and surprising complexity for such young vines. Over the years, successive vintages have shown remarkable cellaring quality. In the winery, traditional techniques are used including open fermentation and hand plunging.
